Obituary of Linda Kaye Britton Mitchell

Linda Kaye Britton Mitchell

April 29, 1948 – April 14, 2024

Linda Kaye Britton Mitchell, daughter of the late Cincinnatus “Nat” Britton and Grace Britton of Frankfort, Kentucky, died peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. Known as “mom” to many, Linda cherished opportunities to give back to those around her, both in tangible ways and those that required a listening ear. Linda was a member, from birth, of Calvary Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and fellowship committee member, sang in the choir, and served as a member of the building committee and as the church clerk. Linda loved the children of her community and was involved in outreach to school children and youth throughout Frankfort and the state to ensure children had needed supplies to return to school or necessities to live each day. Linda was passionate about helping those around her with basic needs and lifting others in times of hardship or need.

Linda served in roles in the Kentucky State Government, where she made her career with the Cabinet of Energy and Environment. Linda’s years of service to the state were recognized in 2013 when she was commissioned Admiral of the great fleet of the Commonwealth for fair and just guardianship of Kentucky's rich natural resources and environmental wealth. Linda retired from the Cabinet after having served for nearly 30 years.

Linda leaves behind her two sons, Michael “Mike” Mitchell of South Carolina and Jason T. Mitchell of Lexington, Kentucky. She also leaves behind sisters Peggy Miller, Sharon Britton, and Natalie Britton, one brother, Larry Britton, and one sister-in-law, Donna Britton, all from Kentucky. Linda also leaves behind one granddaughter, Ellen “Ellie” Mitchell, and one daughter-in-law, Kathryn Mitchell, as well as many close extended family members and those she called her “chosen family.”
