Obituary of Donald Delano Durham

Donald “Don” Delano Durham, age 87, husband of Carolyn Dunn Durham, Lexington, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024. He was born to the late Nathan B. Durham Sr. and the late Bertha Miles Durham of Lexington. Along with his loving wife of 61 years, Don is survived by one brother, Thomas Miles Durham (Linda) of Nicholasville, and a host of family and friends. He is preceded in death by two brothers; Lt. Col. (USAF) Nathan B. Durham Jr., and James Durham of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.  “Papaw” was a name given to him by two special children, LaShea and Blake.

Don graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington.  He enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. While serving, he became a decorated Marksman, winning multiple awards and badges.

When he returned to Lexington, Don earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.  In 1962, he began his engineering career with Staggs and Fisher, where he was named partner. He remained with the firm until his retirement in 2004. During his career, he meticulously designed mechanical systems for new and old buildings and supervised projects throughout the state of Kentucky.  Some of his projects include Appalachian Wireless Arena, St. Claire Medical Center, and various University of Kentucky buildings. He was a member of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). He highly enjoyed his work and always strived for the highest design accuracy.

Being a man of many talents Don enjoyed woodworking, photography, and what he is famously known for, painting. The Durham’s home is adorned with many of his magnificent works of art. His masterpieces leave viewers in awe.

With the love of his life, Don enjoyed traveling. He and Carolyn made memories worldwide, documenting each adventure with many photos and souvenirs.

Don’s benevolent smile and encouraging words will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Friends are asked to celebrate Mr. Durham’s life on February 23rd at Clark Legacy Center in Nicholasville, Ky. Visitation will be 11 am-1 pm, with funeral services following. Internment will be at the Lexington Cemetery with full military honors.
