Obituary of F. Preston Farmer

F. Preston Farmer, born on May 20th, 1933, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on December 31st, 2023.

Preston was born to Rex and Virgie Farmer in Hyden, Kentucky. He grew up beside his two younger sisters, Martha Lou and Pat, who he delighted in teasing, yet was fiercely protective.

Preston's life was marked by a series of remarkable achievements and contributions. He began his journey of lifelong learning by graduating from Columbia Military Academy, where he honed discipline, leadership and a strong sense of duty. This led him to Centre College, where he graduated with distinction. His educational journey was completed after graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he cultivated his passion for the legal profession.

Amid his academic career, Preston embarked on a new adventure by serving in the Army, stationed in Carmel, California, and later in Bordeaux, France. During his military service, he exhibited unwavering dedication to his country.

Preston made significant contributions to the legal community by specializing in insurance defense, representing numerous prominent insurance companies, including Walmart. Preston was also Assistant Attorney General of Kentucky before being appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. His legal prowess earned him recognition as one of Kentucky's Top-Rated Lawyers, and his commitment to the legal field was further demonstrated through his active involvement on the Kentucky Bar Association Board of Governors. He also had the privilege of practicing law alongside his son, Michael Farmer, and daughter, Suzanne Farmer. Together, they upheld a tradition of legal excellence.

In addition to his legal career, Preston served as the chairman of the board for Bank of Columbia, where his wisdom and expertise continues to guide the bank to success. Preston's commitment to his community extended beyond his legal and business endeavors, which was shown through the creation of the Network of Volunteer Professionals in London, Kentucky. Preston's strong work ethic was a defining trait throughout his life, as he approached every task with dedication and diligence, setting a remarkable example for all who knew him.

Preston had a special bond with his son, daughter and grandchildren, and created cherished traditions with each of them. Together, they enjoyed annual vacations to Hilton Head Island and Fort Myers Beach, creating unforgettable memories. Their trips always included visits to the Hilton Head bakery for delicious doughnuts, or beach fireworks and bonfires to celebrate New Years.  Each vacation morning, you could find Preston and his grandchildren in front of the TV, watching their favorite cartoons, sharing laughter, and savoring those precious moments together. Preston's love for sports extended to his grandchildren as well. He took them to UK basketball and football games, instilling in them a passion for the Wildcats and creating lasting bonds through the shared excitement of cheering on the team. Preston also enjoyed spending down time at home with his wife and dogs, Teddy and Farrah.

Known for his selflessness and boundless generosity, Preston touched the lives of many. He was always willing to extend a helping hand or lend a listening ear to those in need. Friends and family alike knew they could rely on his support and wise counsel. Preston was a devoted family man, and his loyalty to his loved ones was unwavering. His deep love for his family was evident in every facet of his life.
