Obituary of Arthur Howard Vaught Jr

<b>Lexington, Kentucky</b> Arthur Howard Vaught, Jr., 76, loving husband and father, is survived by his wife, Zetta Kathryn Coppage Vaught and beloved life partner of 56 years. After a brief illness, he died peacefully, Sunday, August 10, 2014 at his residence in Lexington. He was born in Fortville, Indiana, and grew up near Liberty, Kentucky, son of the late Arthur Howard and Blanche Luttrell Vaught, Sr. He retired from the University of Kentucky, after 35 years of service as a Research Analyst at the Tobacco and Health Research Institute. He was a significant part of the team working on the tobacco and health, funded initially by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and later by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was involved in the machine smoking of experimental cigarettes to find less harmful products. These results led to the development of the Reference Cigarette Program at UK. Under his coordination, the reference cigarettes were utilized around the globe by researchers in national and international laboratories. More importantly, he evaluated and supplied data for smoke results for these products, for these laboratories to ensure they were doing their smoking correctly. He was very proud, justifiably so, of the consistent results he provided for these national and international laboratories. What he did had great value to the tobacco community, in particular, and to the at-large community, as progress continued in tobacco and health related programs. University of Kentucky Dr. Lowell Bush, states his most vivid personal memory with Arthur, involved bringing to him cured, raw burley tobacco leaves and days later, he returned smoke data from cigarettes he manufactured in his laboratory from the samples. This occurred on many occasions over several years. It was amazing how fast he could turn something from the curing barn, to valid smoke information. Arthur was a diligent, accurate, precise and fast worker that contributed to the team. Arthur was interested in the team to the very end, as just days ago; he was telling me about his activities on the job and how to make sure that the quality of the work remained excellent. He will be missed. Additionally, he served as a U.S. Navy Veteran and he was a member of Devondale Baptist Church. His hobbies include the following; UK athletics, growing roses, and watching Fox News. Surviving besides his wife, is his son Greg Vaught of Owensboro, his daughter; Karen Vaught {Todd} Ziegler of Lexington, his sister; Teresa {Mike} Kelly of Versailles and his five grandsons; Brandon A. Vaught of Tupelo, Ms., Tyler Ziegler of Murray, Dylan Vaught of Owensboro, Patrick Ziegler of Denver, Co., and Logan Ziegler of Lexington. He was preceded in death by two brothers Marvin and R. C. Vaught. <b>Funeral Information</b> Services for Mr. Vaught will be 1 PM, Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing, conducted by Rev. Greg Horn, with burial to follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM, Wednesday, at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing. Casket bearers will be his five grandsons and his son-in-law. Honorary Casket bearers will be Edwin Coppage, Nicholas Vanderpool and Robbie Vanderpool.
