Obituary of Joseph Lawton Maner

<b>Lexington, Kentucky</b> Joseph Lawton Maner, 85, retired U.S Army Master Sergeant, died September 8, 2014 surrounded by family at Sayre Christian Village Nursing Home. He was born on November 6, 1928 to Eugene Williamson Maner and Agnes Smith Maner in Sewanee, TN and was the youngest of five children. His wife of 61 years, Bernice Smart Maner, preceded him in death. He is survived by three daughters; Bernice "Bunny" (Kevin) Sornson, Ernestine (Bailey) Arnold, both of Lexington and Harriet (Steve) Key of Coon Rapids, MN, seven grandchildren; Michael and David Eades, Hope Sornson, Bailey Michelle and Joseph Arnold, Christy Key Sturlaugson, and Craig Key; and five great-grandchildren. Joe retired after serving 22 years of active military service, seven of those years in naval aviation and the last 15 years in the regular army. Overseas assignments included a one year tour in Sinop, Turkey, three years with the 8th Infantry Division in Germany, and one year tour in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and two Army Commendation medals. <b>Funeral Information</b> A graveside service will be held September 12 at 1:30PM at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. A gathering to celebrate his life will follow at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing from 3-7.
