Obituary of Sheila Grace Whitaker DeVary

<b>Lexington, Kentucky</b> Sheila Grace Whitaker DeVary, 64, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, November 9, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Hymon Coburn "Sluggo" DeVary, formerly of Winchester, Kentucky, her two daughters, Kirsten {Daren} Turner and Anne {Blake} Preece, and her beloved grandchildren, Seth, Hadley and Luke Turner and Abby and Jake Preece. She also leaves behind two brothers, Larry {Donna} Whitaker, Greg {Barbara} Whitaker, her sister, Carol Whitaker, and a host of nephews and nieces. Sheila was born on September 22, 1950, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Vincent and Marie {Kilburn} Whitaker. She was a proud graduate of Tates Creek High School and the University of Kentucky, where she earned a Master's Degree in Education. For many years, Sheila enjoyed being a stay at home wife and mom, lovingly raising her family. She was actively involved in Centenary United Methodist Church and more recently, was affiliated with Southland Christian Church. She was an avid bridge player and met weekly to play alongside her husband, family, and friends throughout her lifetime. Sheila had a passion for education and the teaching of reading and taught in Lexington at Crawford, Tates Creek, and Leestown Middle Schools for over 25 years, earning the respect and admiration of her students and colleagues. <b>Funeral Information</b> Her visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing, with her Celebration of Life Service, following at 7 p.m.
