Obituary of Donnie Lou Harkins

<b>Online Obituaries for Lexington, Frankfort, and Versailles KY</b> Mrs. Donnie Lou Harkins, 96, former longtime resident of Greenville, MS, passed away after an extended illness on March 16, 2015 at the Hospice of the Bluegrass unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, William L. Annie Laura Foy, and her husband, Ercell Elvin Harkins, Sr. she is survived by her son Ercell Elvin Harkins, Jr. her son-in-law Paul Andrew Johnson, both from Lexington, KY. She is also survived by nephew James Palmer and niece Ollie Jean Lum, both of Greenville, MS, and by nieces Opal Foy King of Amory, MS, Gigi Robinson Laura Mae Wingo of Orlando, Florida. Other survivors include her nephew Ralph Paul Henson of St. Louis, Missouri, and nieces Alice Johnson of Yazoo City, MS, Mildred Evans of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sylvia Burns of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Sarah Frances Harkins Benton of Houston, Texas. Mrs. Harkins is also survived by her long term caregiver and best friend Olivia Clay of Lexington, Kentucky. Mrs. Harkins worked in Greenville as a nurse for most of her life, and attended First Baptist Church. She frequently accompanied her husband and son at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and volunteered at both Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, and St. Joseph High School. Mrs. Harkins became ill in 2003 and moved in with her Son Son in Law in Lexington, Kentucky. She survived several strokes, a broken rib, and even a broken hip. And she maintained her independence until just very recently. She required little assistance and walked every day until this month. Very often she would prepare her own meals. She voted in every election held since she became of legal age to vote. Mrs. Harkins always enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and needlepoint. During her retirement, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and playing with her pets. She also enjoyed scenic drives though Kentucky's Bluegrass Region, and strolling through Lexington's many parks. <b>Funeral Information</b> Visitation will be held in Lexington, KY Greenville, MS, with services and burial in Greenville, MS as follows: Saturday, March 21, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Visitation at Clark Legacy Center Brannon Crossing Nicholasville, KY Tuesday, March 24, 1:00 - 3:00 PM, Visitation, with Services at 3:00 PM at Mortimer Funeral Home, 711 Highway 82 East, Greenville, MS Phone 662-334-4519. Mrs. Harkins will be laid to rest beside her husband at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, following the service.
