Obituary of David Cornelius "Opa" McMurtry

<b>Online Obituaries for Lexington, Frankfort, and Versailles KY</b> Lexington - McMurtry, David Cornelius "Opa", 93, husband of the late Mildred Murray McMurtry died peacefully in his sleep, Thursday, March 13, 2014. A genealogist by hobby and author of family history books, he recently (2010) wrote and published the history of Waveland, Home of the Bryans (Waveland Historic Site-Kentucky State Parks). He retired from the faculty of the University of Kentucky where he taught Business Education. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the army as a military Court Reporter at Camp Lee, Virginia. A native of Harrison County, he was the son of the late Mary (Ammerman) McMurtry and David Caldwell McMurtry. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Harrison County, graduated from Georgetown College, received a Master's degree from the University of Kentucky and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Indiana. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a long time member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the Boone Society. He is survived by a daughter, Michele Ann McMurtry and her husband Timothy Morgan, Potomac, MD, a daughter-in-law Janice Jones McMurtry (wife of the late David Murray McMurtry), a granddaughter Alyson Michele McMurtry and a great granddaughter Adyson Nicole Reisz of Lexington. In addition, he is survived by a step granddaughter, Sibyl Morgan Smith and her husband Darren M. Smith, and three step great grandchildren, Darren McGlohn, Adelaide Jane and Evelyn of Poquson,VA, a step grandson Byron Morgan and his wife Katie Morgan of Kill Devil Hills, NC. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held later in the spring. Memorial contributions are suggested to Waveland State Historic Site, 225 Waveland Museum Lane, Lexington, KY 40514.
