Obituary of Andrew J. Mollura

<b>Online Obituaries for Frankfort, KY</b> FRANKFORT- Andrew J. Mollura, 96, widow of Mary Mollura, died Friday, July 11, 2014 at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center. He was born on May 13, 1918 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania to the late Dominica Staffa Mollura, originally from Italy and Andrew Mollura. Andy attended business school, but his interest led him to serve in the United States Army. Andy trained at Fort Knox and then became a Tank Commander in World War II in the 5th Armored Division. The assignment of Tank Commander came with great responsibility because Andy had to lead a unit of men through some of the hottest fighting in the war, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. One time Andy even risked his own life to free a shell that would not eject from a tank gun by climbing out on the tank, he simply said "Because I was the closest to the top." Andy didn't regard himself better than his men. He cared about his men and was devoted to his work. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Andy returned to central Kentucky and married the love of his life Mary Katharine Howard. He then worked at a distillery in Frankfort which seemed a little calmer, not to mention a little roomier, than working on a tank in the war. In addition to work, Andy enjoyed playing basketball and baseball and was an avid University of Kentucky fan. A good friend of his once said for a small, quiet guy you wouldn't think he would be so good, but Andy was very modest so you would have never known how accomplished he was at work and play. Andy is survived by his sisters, Mary and Sue and his nieces Patti Harper, Patti Schiller and Darlene Martin. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, 2 sisters, and his niece, Toni Marie Sanderson. <b>Funeral Information</b> Graveside Service will be 12pm Friday, July 18, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Joe Sanderson officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 10am-12pm at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd. Serving as casketbearers will be Jamie Martin, Jimmy Martin, Jason Sanderson, Nikolas Niemeyer, Lukas Niemeyer and Norris Kemper. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Anne Marie Sanderson, Nikki Stivers Peters, Angie Stivers, Cody Schiller and the Crestwood Baptist Foundation Sunday School class.
