Obituary of Thomas Overton Townes

<b>Danville, Kentucky</b> TOWNES, Thomas Overton, (Ret) Lt. Col. USAF, 88, loving husband of Ann McAfee Townes, passed away among family and friends Monday, September 15, 2014 at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, Kentucky. Tommy served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theater in the Campaigns of Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan at Nagasaki. Upon returning to civilian life he entered the University of Kentucky and was affiliated with Pershing Rifles, Scabbard Blades, and Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and entered military service once again as Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After an assignment in the "Training for Industry" program at the executive level with Convair San Diego he earned a Masters of Business Administration degree through the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. He served in the field of procurement throughout his military career which culminated in retirement from the Pentagon, Headquarters U. S. Air Force. As a civilian Tom used his expertise in the business and operation functions of Kentucky state government, the University of Louisville, and Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital. He obtained a real estate broker's license and became a master appraiser before his final retirement. He was a member and past deacon of the Presbyterian Church in <b>Danville, Kentucky</b>, a committed Boy Scout volunteer, and an accomplished woodworker. He was fun-loving and particularly enjoyed swimming and sailing. In addition to his wife of sixty-three years, he is survived by devoted children: James O., Rachel Catlett (James), Thomas M. (Charmaine), and Robert F. (Brenda), seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, Rachel Lee and Fay Overton Townes, and siblings, Rachel T. Waters and John A. Townes. The family wishes to express thanks on his behalf for the services of caregiver, Pamela Kincaid, the nurture of dedicated staff and fellow residents of Thomson-Hood, Hospice of the Bluegrass, and all who have supported him with love and kindness along his incredible life journey. He will be greatly missed. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and devotion. <b>Funeral Information</b> Visitation will be 11am-12pm, Friday, September, 19, 2014 at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing with funeral service to follow at 12pm.
