Uncle Vernon was always a positive and uplifting person in my childhood. He always instilled a can do attitude in us children. My prayers go out to all who were close to him. Love Ya Uncle Vern.

It's been so long that I really am not sure what to say. But I have memories of such great times with Uncle Vernon, especially when he would come down on Christmas. And when he brought us to an SU football game (they crushed Holy Cross something like a million to 0, Larry Csonka was the fullback, and it was played at Archibald stadium). I'm sorry we didn't stay in touch and I pray for all those who were close to him.

Uncle Vern you were a wonderful person and very loved. I will always cherish the memories of you, sitting on your lap as a child, our family visit to Kentucky (seeing Mammoth Caves and the Keenland race track), I still have all the postcards and letters you wrote to me over the years. The corn doll, glass figurine and Breyers horse are special keepstakes because you gave them to me.
After my dad died, I was worried that he might not go to heaven because he was agnostic. You reassured me by saying thet "Charlie was the most Christian man you knew". Say hello to my dad in heaven. I love you very much Uncle Vern.
Love,
Amy

My Uncle Vern once asked me to cook him scrambled eggs when I was about nine years old. I had no clue how to cook eggs. Rather than doing it himself, he talked me through the whole process of greasing the pan, cracking the egg, stirring, and cooking. That was almost 40 years ago, and I still remember how proud I was of myself,
Uncle Vern gave me a team picture of Adolf Rupp's last team Every time I saw him I talked about the point guard on the team, Ron Lyons. He was one of his favorite players (it was definitely not Saul Smith) on all of the Kentucky teams.
I am lucky to have known Uncle Vern. He was a fantastic role model that will be greatly missed.

Dear Barbara,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. Uncle Vern was such a big part of our family. I am now 50 years old, but I can vividly remember his highly anticipated visits to Syracuse NY. He would drive into town late at night from Michigan and we would find him in the driveway asleep when we awoke on those early summer mornings. He was always a fan of basketball and brought us up to the basketball courts in Syracuse to play a little street ball. I still have his birthday card when he moved to Lexington and became a Kentucky Wildcat fan. It was tough when Syracuse lost in the championship game in 1996, but if they had to lose it was ok if it was to Uncle Vern's Wildcats. Uncle Vern was like a brother to my father. Those two were always up to something, but it was all in good fun. I can't believe he drove all the way from Lexington 4 years agon when my Dad only had a few more days to live. However, with Uncle Vern you had to expect that he would go to any length to support a friend. What a wonderful man!
All my love,
Mark Brown

Dearest Barbara,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this life change. We so loved being your neighbors for those 18 years. You and Vern watched Alex and Katy grow up and treated them so special, loved and played with Sam, and we had many great conversations. You and Vern were quite a special couple, and the memories we made together will remain with us always. We have been talking about the two of you lately, I am just so sorry we did not come and visit for a spell. God bless you Barbara. I know that Vernon is with God and will be watching over you as he tends his gardens up there!
With love,
Christy and Scott Smith
