Obituary of Clifford H. Shotwell

Obituary VERSAILLES-Clifford Harris Shotwell, 102, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at his home, in the company of his caregiver and friend, Mike Sams. He was born and raised in Woodford County, Kentucky. He was the eldest son of Clifford B. Shotwell and Lucy Harris Shotwell. Clifford attended Elementary School in a one-room schoolhouse located Woodford County, until he went to work on the family farm. In his youth he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working, which allowed him to travel from Maine to Minnesota. After returning to Woodford County following his travels, he met and married Ruby Lancaster, whose father's farm adjoined the Shotwell family farm. Ruby had one child, Ronald Hilton, from a prior marriage, and the couple went on to have one daughter, Donna Joy Shotwell Dodd. Clifford was a life-long tobacco and cattle farmer. He was a devout Baptist and life-long member and Deacon at Hillsboro Baptist Church and Millville Baptist Church. Clifford was a Boy Scout Leader and was active in the Woodford County Farm Bureau for many years. More recently, Clifford enjoyed playing croquet in the backyard and scrabble at the kitchen table with his family - daughter and grandchildren. His humor, playfulness, and spirit transcended all generations within the family and community. He wiggled his eyebrows for his grandchildren, buzzed them with his electro larynx, and gave them rides on his wheelchair. He remembered the first car he ever saw in Versailles, the Great Depression, and World War II. He told wonderful stories of his childhood, which he remembered well. His tales included when, at ten years old, he paid for his own dental work with a check to Dr. Newman, and when he bought his first pony. Clifford is survived by his sister, Lucille Andersen and her husband, Andy Andersen of Louisville; his brother, Clyde Shotwell and his wife, Betsie of Versailles; his sister-in-law, Ethel Rucker of Versailles; his daughter, Donna Dodd of Rockford, Michigan; his grandson, Howard M. Dodd, Jr. of Newport, Kentucky and Caitlin Crowley Dodd of Cincinnati, Ohio; his granddaughter Anna K. Dodd, Esq. and her husband, Jake Rigney, Esq. of Indianapolis, Indiana; his granddaughter Hilary D. Moore, Esq. and her husband, L.C.D.R. Jason R. Moore of Jacksonville, North Carolina; his step-grandsons Sean and Gary Hilton of New Zealand; and his five great grandchildren: Howard Cohen Dodd, Nora Crowley Dodd, Amelia Shotwell Dodd, Jason Howard Moore, and Liam Robert Moore. Clifford was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Anne Shotwell; his stepson Ronald Hilton and his wife, Jill Hilton; his son-in-law, Howard M. Dodd; his sisters Elsie Drury and Ernestine Shotwell; and his brother James Shotwell. Funeral Information Funeral Service will be 10:00AM Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill with Rev.
