Obituary of Nicholas Gabriel Piacsek

Nicholas Gabriel Piacsek, 77, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Nick was born in Vöcklabruck, Austria, in a Displaced Persons Camp. He is preceded in death by his parents, Istvan Piacsek and Adrienne Vasarhelyi Piacsek, and brothers Steve and Béla Piacsek. Having fled Hungary in 1944, Nick and his family emigrated to America in 1952. He grew up in South Bend, IN where he graduated from St. Joseph High School and Indiana University, South Bend.

An Army veteran, Nick served in the Intelligence Corps (POLOB) in Saigon, Viet Nam, from 1968-1969.

Most of Nick’s working career was spent in public service in Frankfort, Kentucky, where he worked for the departments of banking, personnel, and housing, building and construction, in addition to several others. He educated himself early on in the practical use of computers and served many supervisors and coworkers as a valuable cyber resource.
Nick enjoyed keeping Christmas, basking on sunny beaches, cooking Hungarian style, listening to all kinds of music, curating quality office supplies, following men’s and women’s sports, walking Pete and Buddy, and reading obituaries.
Nick spoke three languages, sang harmony, and had encyclopedic knowledge of history, geography, political science and sports, yet he carried himself with self-deprecating humor. Nick will be remembered for his humility, kindness and generosity. He embodied goodwill to all, human and animal alike.
He will be deeply missed by many friends and family, especially his adoring nieces and nephews. He is survived by his cherished and loving wife of 51 years, Jeanmarie Manion Piacsek; his devoted children, Nicholas Alexander Piacsek and Rachel Erin Piacsek, Lexington; his sister, Marika Piacsek, South Bend, IN; and his lifelong best friend Geza Bruckner.
A gathering, to celebrate Nick’s life, will be held at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing, on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 4-6 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Woodford County Humane Society.
