Obituary of Glen Allen Bottoms

Glen Allen Bottoms, 90, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Glen was born December 8, 1932, to Albert “Casey” and Alma Ryan Bottoms in Mackville, Kentucky. He is the oldest brother of Donald “Raine” (Betty) Bottoms of Columbus, OH, the late Robert Bruce Bottoms (Ella) and Linda Bottoms (Stan) Riney of Harrodsburg. He graduated from Mackville High School in 1951, and then served as a Pfc. In the medical corps in the United States Army from 1953-1955.

He attended Campbellsville Junior College (1956-58) and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1960 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Wood and Bush Construction Co. from 1960-61. The Kentucky Department of Highways was his next employer, where he worked in bridge design and construction.

With four daughters to educate, he knew it could not be done on his present salary. He saw the need for supply business in Kentucky. On October 15th, 1967, he opened Bottoms Engineering and Service, Inc. It was the only one in the state of Kentucky, continuing today to be highly successful. In 1990, Glen opened another supply and engineering business in Tennessee, like the one in Kentucky.

With his interest in Christian education, Glen was instrumental in the purchase of a building for Frankfort Christian Academy, which opened with 37 students, grades 1-6.  It now has many more students, and grades Pre-K – 12. In 2002, Glen was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the Academy.

Glen is survived by his wife of 72 years, Barbara Black Bottoms, the daughter of Bill and Grace Boswell Black of Mackville, Kentucky. In addition to Barbara, he leaves behind four daughters: Glenna Loraine Bottoms of Frankfort, Sheila Bottoms Gerkin of Frankfort, Casey Bottoms Hamblen of Trussville, AL, and Melissa Bottoms (John) Bodie of Trussville, AL. Glen has five grandchildren, Samantha, Josh (Lori), Whitney, Rachael (Mandy), and Zachary (Ruth); three great-grandchildren, Claudia, Jack, and George; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00pm on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd, Frankfort with Rev. Todd Lester, Steve Bottoms, and Tommy Thompson officiating.
