



Obituary of Lee Charles Harris
Dr. Lee Charles "Chic" Harris, Dearborn, MI departed this life Thursday, June 15th, 2023, peacefully in her home. A native of Frankfort, KY, she was the daughter of the late George Lee Harris and Grace Twyman Harris. Lee Charles Harris, a beloved resident of Frankfort, KY, left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those who knew her. She will be remembered for her steady spirit, exceptional talents, and her profound impact on the community.
Born on March 1, 1934, she attended local schools, where her brilliance and dedication were evident to both her peers and mentors. Lee's thirst for knowledge led her to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Kentucky State University, followed by a nursing degree from Howard University [then: Freedmen's Hospital School of Nursing]m then a Master's and Doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky. She concluded her education pursuits with a Master's in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Her commitment to academic excellence was commendable, and she became an inspiration to many aspiring students.
Professionally, Lee Charles Harris soared to great heights, forging an impressive career that garnered recognition and respect from colleagues and industry professionals alike. With tireless determination, she helped to start the Nursing School at Kentucky State and climbed the ranks, to eventually serve as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs. Lee's strategic insights, visionary leadership, and relentless pursuit of innovation played a pivotal role in the continued success of KSU. Her contributions were invaluable, and she continued her commitment by serving with the Kentucky State University Alumni Association, as well as the Kentucky State Foundation.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Lee Charles Harris was a compassionate and kind-hearted individual, always willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. Whether it was supporting her beloved sorority of 70 years (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated), volunterring at local shelters, oranizing fundraising events, opr mentoring aspiring professionals, Lee's selflessness and generosity have touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an enduring legacy of compassion and empathy.
She is survived by her brother-in-law Edward S. Tyler of Detroit, MI; two nieces Eddena Lee Watt [Derrel] and Debra Walaine Tyler, two grand nephews and two grand nieces, Derrel Edward Watt [Meg], Darius Jerod Tyler and Deondra Elaine King [Oliver], and great niece Denaja King, of Detroit, MI. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved sister Marlene Dexter Tyler [Edward].
Lee Charles Harris leaves behind a profound void in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. While we mourn her loss, we also find solace in the memories we shared and the impact she made during her time with us.
May her soul find eternal peace, and may her spirit continue to guide and inspire us as we navigate the journey of life.
Alpha Kappa Alpha will hold a ceremony on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 10:30 am at Clark Legacy Center, Frankfort, 3000 Versailles Road, with funeral service to follow at 11am, with Rev. Townsend officiating.
After the funeral, a final commital service will be held in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Frankfort, KY.
