Obituary of Florentina Dorsey

Florentina Matilda Dorsey, 92, died peacefully Saturday, June 17th in Lexington, Kentucky.

Tina, as everyone called her, was born on March 14th, 1931 in sunny San Diego, California.

She made her home in the Chollas View Mount Hope neighborhood in San Diego, where, as a community member, she was known to cook meals for the neighborhood kids. She married twice before divorcing both husbands to pursue a better quality of life for both her children and herself. Tina worked hard to that end, often working multiple jobs to provide her family with the things they needed. Of her many jobs, she would continue to tell of her time at Sherman Elementary, where she spent many years and was recognized for her outstanding service to the youth of San Diego County Schools. Drawings from her students can still be found among Tina’s many sentimental belongings.

Tina was also an avid and lifelong member of the Church of Christ, after joining the congregation on the corner of 38th and Hemlock Streets in San Diego. After moving to Tucson, Arizona, she established her membership at the Southside Church of Christ, where she never missed a First Sunday Singing, potluck, or Ladies’ Day Celebration. Tina was also a member of Southside’s Golden Age Club.

The last several years of Tina’s life were spent in Kentucky, where she moved to be closer to her youngest son, Chris, and her grandchildren

In her free time, Tina could be found at home, either cooking, studying her bible, or spending time with her grandchildren. More often than not, these three things were combined. Evenings were spent in her living room arm chair, where she watched her “programs”  and crocheted scarves, hats or blankets while she enjoyed a nice dessert. Tina was nothing if not a lover of good food and dessert.

She is survived by her youngest son, Christopher Levi Dorsey and her 5 grandchildren.

A private ceremony will be held for Tina on Friday, June 23rd. Flowers can be sent to Clark Legacy Center in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
