Obituary of Mary Sturgill Phillips

   Lexington- It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mary Dorcus Sturgill Phillips. Born January 8th, 1930, to Robert Lee and Willie Beam Sturgill in Lexington, Kentucky, Mary was raised on a farm on Liberty Road. Days were spent riding ponies and exploring fields alongside her 5 siblings: Paul (2019), Bob, Charlotte (2021), Hugh and David. After graduating Lafayette High School in 1948, Mary enrolled in nursing school which was interrupted by her marriage to Tom Phillips in 1951.

 

They raised three sons Tommy (2019), Bruce (2003), and Daniel. Later in life Mary found great satisfaction working at Cross Gate Gallery for over 40 years. Mary was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and a founding member of Anchor Baptist Church. She was active in its choir and church activities. Charming, witty, loving and kind, Mary’s qualities and accomplishments will always be celebrated by her many friends and family.

 

She is survived by her son Daniel (Brooke), brothers Bob, Hugh, David, sister-in-Law, Elizabeth Roberts and daughter-in-law, Annette Phillips. Grandchildren include Amanda and Kenny Phillips, Piper and Blake Phillips.

 

Visitation Friday January 6th, 5-7:00 PM at Anchor Baptist Church.Funeral service Saturday January 7th, 10:00 at Anchor Baptist Church.
