Obituary of Jean Herzer Shaw
Jean Herzer Shaw, 96, wife of Gordon W. Shaw, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022. She was born in Starkville, Mississippi on July 17, 1925 to the late Fred and Ruby Camp Herzer. Jean was a homemaker and a member of Versailles United Methodist Church.
She was the first woman to graduate with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Alabama. Her talents as an artist and fashion illustrator allowed her the opportunity to finance Gordon's way through optometry school. Jean also provided the illustrations in the Woodford Memorial Hospital Cookbook. She joined others in the interior design of the Methodist Church on Court Street, the Woodford Memorial Hospital, and the Lieutenant Governor's Mansion.
Her most demanding public service was as one of the founding organizers and promoters for the Historic Jack Jouett House. Jean worked many years and made many friends in their efforts to transform the dilapidated cabin into what it is today. A constant source of joy and enduring friendships was her Garden Club friends of over fifty years. Each meeting offered a time for friends to be together and enjoy a favorite hobby.
She was a wonderful mother, wife, and friend that always carried a positive attitude.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Hope Shaw (Glen) Brovont, Versailles; her son, Gordie (Erin) Shaw, Versailles; and her grandchildren, Catherine Dodge and Sarah Lemay, Bethanne Gardner, and Brandy Brovont.
Gathering of Family and Friends was held from 4:00pm until 6:00pm on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jack Jouett House 255 Craig's Creek Rd., Versailles, 40383.
