Obituary of Dorothy Pattie Large

Dorothy Pattie Large died Wednesday, April 14 at Sayre Christian Village. She is survived by two sons, Russell (Miko) and Jack (Julie), five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was director of Senior Adult Programs for the Lexington Recreation Department for 40 years. Her program provided unique opportunities for senior adults including travel. The travel program began with day trips but quickly developed into travel within the United States and internationally.

Dorothy was also the director of UK's Donovan Scholars Radio Drama for eighteen years and taught autobiography classes for ten years. She hosted WLEX TV's Leisure Show for 26 years. She was also founder and director of Camp Kennedy, a summer day camp for individuals with disabilities. She also founded and directed the Centenary United Methodist Church Kindergarten.

Dorothy had many awards and affiliations to her credit. She received the KRPS Presidential Citation, the National Federations of Music Clubs Award of Merit; the Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award; Senior Hall of Fame and in 2000 received the Heroes, Saints and Legends Award from the Methodist Church Wesley Village. In 2010 she was inducted into the KRPS Hall of Fame for her lasting and extraordinary contributions to the Parks and Recreation movement and the progress of senior adult programs in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Salvation Army or St. Jude's Hospital for Children. I private family service will be held.
