Cindy was always so mentally sharp and humorous and seemed to not only know what I said but could read between the lines. My children are about 15 years behind hers. I was amazed as she told me my future as far as the stages I would be going through with my children as she was closing chapters on hers. Cindy and Paul and Steamboat (my brother) and Jan Hockensmith were always up for a celebration and I was glad to have shared a few of them. I miss Cindy and cherish her memory. I hope Little Carter will remember his wonderful and interesting grandmother.

My memories of Cindy go way back to the early 70's. When Bonnie and I moved to Lexington for me to finish my schooling at UK we moved into an apartment complex on Versailles road. (Crestbrook apartments) We were in a lower unit of a 3 story building. Next to me was two young studs, Paul Carter and Tom Brooks. I had brought back from Korea with me a full array of japanese stereo equipment that Paul was astonded over. We become good friends that continues to today.,
During then he met Cindy, they were married and the friendship continued with many trips together. House boat trips, Ky. Derbies and several trips to Florida and the Smokey mountains.
Oh, the stories I could tell.
In the summer of 1999 when I was despondent over my very recent divorce she told me at a party at Ben's when she could see I was struggling, "Jim, you are a suvivor" I always remembered those kind words.
My heart goes out to Paul, Kim and Tracy and Cindy's family, Doug, Donnie and Candy.
She was and always will be special.
I found a few photo's in the archives that recall some of those times.

I met Cindy when we were in nursing school together. At one point ,she shared a story about a canoe trip she had taken with a group in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. Her enthusiasm for this trip was catching so we headed to Ely, Minnesota in July 1969 As she predicted it was a great adventure- one I have shared with many over the years and appreciated her encouragement.
As the years passed , we lost touch and today when I opened the Lexington Herald and saw her picture I knew it was her. I am sorry to think we were not that far from each other - I would have loved to see her again. The comments from her coworkers do not
surprise me- that was the Cindy I knew way back in nursing school - a wonderful person!
Condolences to the family. Julia Benner Perry

So sorry to hear of Cindy’s passing. I worked with Cindy on 4-south at UK when I was a new nurse. She was such a great mentor. She had a gift of using humor to put things in perspective. She was very knowledgeable and a calming force for this nervous Nellie. Lots of good memories working with Cindy. She will be missed.

My sincere sympathy to Cindy’s family. I worked with Cindy in the nicu and she made me several pieces of beautiful furniture. One was a “play table “ for my son in the 90s that I recently refinished for my grandson. Cindy was a joy to work with. She had a sharp mind and a quick wit.

Cindy was always so friendly from day one of knowing her. When Kim and I cheered together, she never batted an eye over picking me up for practices or bringing me home. She mothered me right alongside her two girls. Her home was always open to me. Her kindness and friendship will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with the family throughout this difficult time. Love you all!

The last time I saw Cindy was at a doctor’s office a few years ago. She ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug! It was like no time had passed. I will always be thankful to her for helping me navigate my angsty teenage years, the countless drives home from school, and ALWAYS being cool with last minute sleepovers. She was a tremendous person and a fierce Mama. I will never forget her. Sending love, peace and comfort to all of her sweet family and friends.
