Obituary of Paul Armstrong Jr., D.M.D.

Paul J. Armstrong Jr., D.M.D., 84, retired periodontist died on Jan. 31, 2021 in Lexington, KY.  Son of the late Paul J. Armstrong D.D.S. of Covington, KY and Betty Armstrong nee Hutcheson of Middlesboro, KY.  Dr. Armstrong graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Transylvania University of Kentucky in 1964 along with a certificate from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from the University of Louisville in 1967 where he was initiated into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Scholastic Honor Society.  He received a Certificate in Periodontology Section at the VA Hospital in Birmingham.  While at the University Alabama, he published several articles on the evaluation of antibiotics in the treatment of periodontal disease which resulted in his being invited to speak at the Second International Conference on Periodontal Research in Aarhus, Denmark.

  Dr. Armstrong returned to Lexington in 1975 to join his father in the practice of Periodontics. In 1986, he was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry.  In 1978, he became interested in the exciting prospect of replacing missing teeth with dental implants and founded the Lexington Dental Implant Society and served as its President for several years.  In addition to his private practice, Armstrong became a FDA investigator for evaluation of the efficacy of dental implants.  He was active in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and served on the Admissions and Credentials Committee and on the Board of Trustees.  He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry and was elected to Honored Fellow status in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. 

    Dr. Armstrong was instrumental in developing and testing different bone and barrier materials for use in rebuilding patients’ jaw bones that had been lost through disease or trauma.  He lectured locally, nationally and internationally to study clubs, dental societies and dental schools.  In 1986, he was invited to speak at the First Symposium at Ohio State University on soft tissue grafting around dental implants and in 1995 at the International Symposium on Dental Implants at the University of Balogna, Italy.  In 2017 he received the 50 year Award for service in dentistry.  Dr. Armstrong attended Mary Queen of the Holary Rosary Church and was a Lector for several years.  He enjoying watching his son, Samuel Emil Armstrong, play Little League Baseball at South Lexington where he was named best pitcher in 2013 and 2014 and also participated in two World Series games.  Samuel has been a source of great joy and happiness to his dad due to his academic achievements at the University of Kentucky College of Engineering.  Sam received his Pilot’s License on his seventeeth birthday and his first passenger was a very nervous Dad.  Dr. Armstrong lived in Equestrian Woods and had great friends and neighbors in to discuss world and local events as well as the benefits of good wine.

  In addition to Sam, Dr. Armstrong is also survived by a step-daughter Sara Rechelle Willis, a sister, Grayce Stewart, a brother, Mark Francis Armstrong, and three nephews, Mark Hunter Armstrong, Edward Price Armstrong and Paul Keelan Armstrong.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am  Thurs., Feb. 4, 2021 at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
