It was my pleasure to have met Gene while I was commander of CG Port Security Unit 303 stationed in the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Gene was a true gentleman and a dedicated Coast Guardsman. The USCG was privileged to have a man of his caliber among its members. Thomas J. Johnson, CDR, USCG (RET)

That was a hilarious scene. Dad and I really enjoyed touring Bourbon distilleries and horse farms with you and Leigh. We appreciate how loving and supportive y’all have been to us over the years.

I am Gene's younger brother Ron's son, Leigh and I "adopted" the Noles in 1976. Bobby Bowden's first year and they went 5 and 6. (Which was much better than the Bucs!) Gene was always happy that he had a kindred soul for his Noles in the family. We would talk during the season about our team cultivating with the FSU/UF game. Almost 20 years ago Gene mentioned that the KY papers did not cover Florida State too well. (Hey, it wasn't like we were Gators!) I told him no problem I'll send you the articles from our papers. (During that era Tampa had 2 papers). The Tampa Tribune was pro Gator and the Times was neutral. So every Sunday I get 2 papers cut out the articles and send them to him the next week. Gene despised Miami, and wasn't fond of UF. I will miss the comradery we enjoyed. Ronald Leigh Radib

My first meeting in Lexington KY visiting Uncle Gene during the summer of 2019 was a wondefully delightful experience, with this young 89 year old

Uncle Gene planned excursions during our stay. WOW! The burbon distillery tours are many. The Waterford was the first and enjoyed the tasting at the end with two more to follow, but none more exquisite. The second day tour of the majestic horse farms is where we viewed the beautiful grounds and stalls of foals and mares. The future Kentucky Derby runners. Then off to Waveland House for a old fashioned high tea. This is where Uncle Gene won my heart. He, Wendy and I were sitting waiting on a wooden bench when Susan beautifully dressed in her blue gown of the Civil War Era summoned Wendy. Enjoying the weather Uncle Gene and I sitting on opposite ends of the bench talked how lovely the grounds were. In a few minutes Wendy waved us over and Uncle Gene stood up as I like a seesaw fell to the ground as the bench reached to the sky falling back toward me. As he turned back seeing my plight he graciously extended his arm. Looking at this gentleman standing 5'5" about 140 pounds I started to accept. But sitting backwards on the knoll all I could envision is that we both would be on the ground. What a gutsy guy jumping to the aid of a damsel in distress as Canadian Mounted Dudley Do Right saving Penelope. Love you. God bless you sir.
